Being kind can be described as an action whose intention is to benefit the other person. Kindness involves both active and passive acts of kindness. The word “kind” comes from the Latin word “kinder” which means “to make more gentle”. The dictionary defines kind as:
• the quality or state of being kind; gentleness, tenderness, compassion; giving one’s self to another without expectation of anything in return.
In everyday language we tend to express this by using the word “nice”. However there is a difference between the two, which is that nice does not necessarily mean kind, though it often does (e.g., nice people are nice). Kindness can mean being kind without expecting anything in return from others and can involve doing something for somebody without expecting anything in return or seeing it as a favor done so to please them (e.g., making someone else feel better).
